A link is only useful if it is from a good webpage to another good webpage.

Will these links be intrusive? Will they look wierd on my website? Do they have to be visible?

If you put the links on the bottom of your web page, then it won't be intrusive. You'll be surprised how few people will even recognise that the link exists on your page!
It shouldnt' look wierd. If you place it neatly on your website, it shouldn't compromise your website design. Think of it this way... what is more important? A website that is found that has some links at the bottom or a website that looks very tidy and clean, but has no visitors?
All links MUST be visible. Make them your normal link color. Don't make them the same color with the background. Search engines are smart and may blacklist you!

Recommendation: Be Patient with your Link Partners

Remember, your link partners are busy and have other things in life to do besides responding to your link requests.
If someone has linked to your website, try create the reciprocal link within 7-14 days. Be courteous, someone has just taken the time to help you rank better.
Also, the partner has the right to choose NOT to link back to you. This may be for personal reasons, and if you find after 20-30 days that you have not received the link back to you, then of course, feel free to remove the link from your site.
